Sylvania salutes college’s Veterans

In honor of Veterans’ Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Sylvania Campus is hosting a four-day celebration of PCC’s veterans, including those who have served, or are currently serving, among PCC’s students, faculty, and staff. All activities will take place in the Upper Mall of the College Center.
Veterans’ Wall on Display – Nov. 3-12.?Back by popular demand, the Veterans’ Wall will make an extended appearance to serve as the centerpiece for this year’s events.
‘War Ink’ – Nov. 3-4.?Coordinated by the Rock Creek Veterans Resource Center, “War Ink” is a photo exhibit of Veterans’ tattoos and the stories they tell of service. Subjects for the photos come from both the Sylvania and Rock Creek campuses
Soldier Songs and Voices – Noon-1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 4.?The group offers free guitar and songwriting lessons to Vets. They will perform and then talk with Vets in the Veterans Resource Center (Room 246, College Center) about their program until 2 p.m.
Veterans’ Health and Wellness Fair – 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5.?A resource fair focused on Veterans’ overall well-being. Vendors from the VA include the Portland Vet Center, OEF/OIF/OND Program (medical center) and Suicide Prevention Team. Also confirmed are Operation Homefront, Returning Veterans Project, Portland Veterans Acupuncture Project, PCC’s Counseling Office, Dental Hygiene Program, and more.
Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony – Noon-1 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6.?A traditional military-style ceremony featuring the 234th Army National Guard Band, PCC’s own Julianne Johnson, remarks from Vice President and Veteran Chris Chairsell, keynote speech from Cameron Smith (director of Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs), and the presentation of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Swan Island.
