Photos and story by James Hill
PCC, Portland Public Schools, and Worksystems Inc. co-hosted the fourth annual Reengagement Plus Convening at the PCC Cascade Campus and Lloyd Center Double Tree, Dec. 10-11. The event is a major national gathering of 250 leaders, supporters and staff representing 40-plus school districts from around the country. The conference – which was sponsored by Gateway to College National Network, National League of Cities, Aspen Opportunity Youth Incentive Fund, and Youth Transition Funders Group – showcased the alternative programs that connect students to a high school diploma or GED.
On Thursday, Dec. 11, Cascade Campus hosted a panel discussion on those alternative programs with PPS Superintendent Carole Smith, Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, PCC President Jeremy Brown and City of Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. PCC reengages low-income and disconnected youth through the PCC Links Programs, Career Pathways, Adult Basic Education/GED testing, and workforce training.
