Governor signs Future Connect bill in front of PCC crowd
Photos and story by James Hill
A legion of Portland Community College and Future Connect Scholarship Program supporters, including PCC Interim President Sylvia Kelley, Board Trustee Jim Harper, Sylvania President Lisa Avery and a cast of many staff and students, convened at Oregon Gov. Kate Brown’s ceremonial office in Salem’s?Capitol Building on Monday, Sept. 28. Gov. Brown ceremonially signed House Bill 3063, or known as the “Aspirations to College” bill, to wild applause from the contingent who surrounded her as she signed the required paperwork.
The law, based on PCC’s Future Connect model, appropriates $3 million?to the Higher Education Coordinating Commission to be expended for a grant program that distributes the funds?to community colleges, or any foundations of community colleges, to increase the number of underserved, low-income and first-generation college-bound students who enroll in community college and make progress toward degree or certificate. For the PCC Foundation, that means its Future Connect Program will get a funding boost for years to come.
