PCC shows its support for Umpqua CC victims with candlelight vigils
Photos and story by James Hill
Portland Community College?students got together to plan candlelight vigils across the PCC district Wednesday, Oct. 7. Crowds turned out at all of the main PCC campuses to stand in solidarity with Umpqua Community College after last week’s shooting tragedy on its Roseburg campus.?Students, staff and faculty gathered at 5 p.m. to?light nine candles, read the names of the victims and have a moment of silence. Below is a growing gallery of?photos from the vigils taken by students and staff.
I’ve been reluctant to post this because I don’t want to detract from the main point of the article. Let me be clear that mourning the tragedy is my number one priority and I feel very sad for everyone involved.
However, I am also very concerned about something that happened at the Moment of Silence at Sylvania. Someone there, I think named Miguel, used the event to promote his own religious organization and tried to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else. I certainly don’t blame the organizers of the event, but I think this was an extremely inappropriate attempt to capitalize on the tragedy to promote his own beliefs.
Church and state need to remain separate.
