Rock Creek Roundup: Staff art competition picks its winners and pantry teams with food bank

Twenty one artists submitted 29 pieces of art for the Second Annual Faculty & Staff Art Competition and exhibit that opened Feb. 6 in Helzer Gallery (Building 3 at Rock Creek). The show will be available until Feb. 28. First prize went to Adam Lucero for his 20 digital scans of original letter illustrations taken in Utah in the fall of 2017 and second prize went to Hilary Campbell for “Willamette No. 1, 2018.” Third prize went to Greg Contreras for his nine “Dos Sombreros 2018” mixed media drawings.
Other contributing artists include Matthew Altman, Angie Berdahl, Sheryl Butler, Anthony Catalan, Jamie Costa, Dorina Cornea-Hasegan, Karol Ford, Jennifer Hamlin, Jenny Kirchler, Walter Morales, Annette Murphy, Janis Nichols, Brandy Pagan, Jacqlyn Proper, Usha Ramanujam, Payal Roy, Karen Sanders and David Sandrock, all faculty and staff members at the Rock Creek Campus.
The annual event is sponsored by the Rock Creek Campus President’s Office. It is coordinated by art instructor and gallery curator Prudence Roberts.
Transfer Day Draws a Crowd at Rock Creek
More than 25 Oregon colleges and universities participated in the Jan. 30 Oregon Transfer Day at? Rock Creek. The half-day event is an opportunity for students to talk face to face with admissions representatives from all over the state and learn how easy it is to transfer from PCC to four-year institutions. Transfer Days are hosted across the PCC District and the Rock Creek event is coordinated by the Campus Jobs, Internships and Career Exploration Office.
Panther Pantry Partners with Oregon Food Bank
The campus’ Panther Pantry has formed a partnership with the Oregon Food Bank to increase access to fresh food for Rock Creek students. According to Mandy Ellertson, Student 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网ment manager at Rock Creek, the new agreement means students will have access to fresh food donated from farmers plus other items donated by grocery stores.
“We also can purchase things like milk and eggs, butter and meat at prices that are much lower than prices at our current sources,” she said. “The benefit to our students is beyond words. Students who forget their lunch can swing in for an apple or orange and those who are food insecure can access a well-rounded and stocked pantry.”
To celebrate the partnership with the Oregon Food Bank, the Pantry hosted an open house last month complete with refreshments and a three-piece jazz band.

Nine Rock Creek students and one mentor will attend the 36th Annual Hispanic 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网 Institute conference in Chicago this week.
More than 6,500 student, representing 40 states, are attending. In additional to hearing from an array of nationally recognized motivational speakers, the students will attend educational workshops focused on developing leadership skills and will engage in networking with potential employers from all over the country.
Black History Museum Comes to Rock Creek
On Jan. 18, the Rock Creek Campus Multicultural Center sponsored the Black History 101 Mobile Museum which is a collection of more than 7,000 artifacts of Black memorabilia dating from the trans-Atlantic slave trade era to hip-hop culture. Some prominent artifacts are documents signed by Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Booker T. Washington, Fredrick Douglas, Dr. Dorothy Height, Elijah Muhammad, Ralph Bunch, Coretta Scott King, Michael Jackson, Muhammad Ali, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan and Angela Davis.
