Local artists take center stage in Winter Experience Music Series

The Experience Music Series winter concerts, presented by the Portland Community College Department of Music, will feature three live virtual concerts in February and March. Viewers are invited to participate in a question and answer session with the artists will follow each performance. There is no charge to view, but donations are gratefully accepted. Northwest Piano Trio | 7 p.m., Feb. 2
The Northwest Piano Trio will perform a diverse program featuring works by Romantic composers Clara and Robert Schumann, Impressionist composer Maurice Ravel, Spanish composer Joquin Turina and more. Based in Portland, the Trio, with violinist Esther Shim, cellist Hannah Hillebrand and pianist Susan McDaniel, is committed to the performance of traditional classical music while also exploring the music of 20th and 21st century composers.
Their goal is to appeal to a wide array of audiences in varied settings, from the time-honored concert hall to the “virtual venue.” They are passionate presenting unique performances that give listeners a contemporary perspective on a non-contemporary art form.
Christopher Woitach Quartet | 5 p.m., Feb. 16
Portland jazz guitarist extraordinaire Christopher Woitach performs a wide range of styles – from Dixieland to Free jazz, Ragtime to Bebop – with his quartet. Woitach’s compositions reflect his diverse musical tastes and abilities and combine the intricacies of Baroque counterpoint with the freedom of modern jazz. He will be joined by John Moak on trombone, Tim Gilson on bass and Charlie Doggett on drums.
Grupo Borikuas | 5 p.m., March 2
Grupo Borikuas is a Portland-based a Latin band that performs dynamic ethnic music from Puerto Rico with Afro-Caribbean roots. The band’s mission is to spread Puerto Rican music and culture throughout the Portland area with the help of their beautiful vocal harmony, virtuosic percussion, and charming, friendly stage presence. Ramón Cancel (lead guitar, Puerto Rican cuatro, and vocals), Aquiles Montas and Martín Velez (percussion and vocals), and Neftalí Rivera (guitar and lead vocalist) give life to the music of their homeland.
The Experience Music Series is presented by the Portland Community College Department of Music and is sponsored by grants from the Reser Family Foundation, the Cultural Coalition of Washington County, and the Oregon Cultural Trust.
