Welcome to CAMP! Seven students get started with their academic journeys

Portland Community College’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) officially welcomed seven new students to its 2021-22 cohort during a daylong orientation event at the Rock Creek Campus. The newcomers got to know staff, student mentors who are former CAMP students, and each other while also picking up supplies and learning all about the resources they’ll need to make their remote and in-person college experience a success.
CAMP, which has an annual cohort of 45 students, is a federally-funded program designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds during their first year in college. Students are provided with financial assistance and support services to prepare them for transferring to a four-year college or university.
“CAMP acknowledges that our students can go further with their education and their lives,” said Greg Contreras, CAMP director. “These are at-risk, first-generation students, all of them people of color. The CAMP program gives them a chance to be trailblazers into higher education from their families.”
