National Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society selects PCC alum for literary publication
Story by Misty Bouse
Portland Community College averages around 1,800 Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) members annually. But one special PCC alum and honor student, Kay Glass, has been selected for publication in Phi Theta Kappa’s “Nota Bene” literary journal from more than 800 entries submitted for the 28th edition competition.
Glass is one of 24 national PTK members featured in the only national literary journal for community college students. Her short story, “A Moment of Proof,” is about Marie Curie’s discovery of Radium, and “that quiet moment when she was the only person in the world who knew of its existence,” shared Glass, who is transferred to Portland State University last fall to continue her pursuit of a career in psychology.
“Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is much more than a fancy emblem on a diploma or an honor cord to be worn with graduation regalia,” said Dana Bonifacio-Sample, director of Student Life, 欧洲杯决赛竞猜app_欧洲杯足球网-投注|官网 and Student Engagement & Operations. “PTK honor society provides practical tools and benefits. PTK offers PCC students like Kay recognition, scholarship resources, career training, transfer success tools, and leadership training and practice opportunities.”
Membership includes access to $246 million in transfer scholarships offered by over 800 four-year colleges and universities across the country. In fact, PTK chose six students to receive scholarships for their exemplary entries in its literary journal showcasing the outstanding writing of community college students.?The American Association of Community Colleges has named PTK the official honor society for two-year colleges and it is the only such honor society with this distinction.
Phi Theta Kappa is organized around four hallmarks: scholarship, service, leadership and fellowship; PTK participates in many community service projects.
To join you must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above and have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours of college-level work. Members pay a $100 fee for a lifetime membership. With its own college transfer and scholarship search banks, the national PTK organization has millions of dollars in scholarships available to deserving students.
