Hillsboro Aviation helicopter drops by AMT Career Day

Photos and story by

A Hillsboro Aviation Robinson R-22 helicopter dropped by the Aviation Maintenance Technology’s Career Day on Wednesday, October 9 at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus (17705 N.W. Springville Road). Following the landing, the aircraft was rolled over near the hangar and AMT students were able to view it up close. The Hillsboro Aviation’s Director of Maintenance and graduate of the PCC program, Seth Hansen, showed the students the ins and outs of the maintenance routine for the Robinson R-22 and fielded questions.

The Career Day was for students in the Aviation Maintenance Technology program to get a flavor of the jobs that are available in the industry. Activities included job interview techniques, resume building and writing, and presentations by participating aviation companies. Also on hand at the Career Day was Boeing Portland – a local manufacturing branch of the aerospace giant, Boeing Airplane Company, which facilitated paid internships of four AMT students for a five-week period last summer; and?Columbia Helicopters of Aurora, which represents a significant part of the heavy lift helicopter operators in Oregon.

The Aviation Maintenance Technology and Aviation Science programs at the Rock Creek Campus are both certified by the FAA. Together they operate a modern 30,000-square-foot, two-hanger complex that contains 15 aircraft, including five helicopters. As part of the learning process, the programs enjoy a collaborative relationship with Hillsboro Aviation, which is involved with aircraft flight training and maintenance program graduate hiring.

I think I would have worded this headline differently.

It sounds like there was a helicopter nearby to Career Day, and it dropped.

Yeah, this is bizarre. I love aviation and everything, but the headline could have been worded completely differently. I expected to read about some people who died because a random helicopter fell out of the sky near PCC on Career Day. Nope, not it.
