Gerontology, one of the first programs to host annual ‘completion ceremony’

The college’s graduation, set for June 13, is right around the corner, which means “completion ceremony season” – to celebrate students’ achievements prior to commencement – is about to begin at Portland Community College.
At the Sylvania Campus, the Gerontology Program hosted its completion ceremony on May 21 to honor the accomplishments of those students receiving a degree or certificate this year. The event served as an opportunity for students to connect with faculty and staff, as well as with community partners that contribute to the success of the Gerontology Program.
As students were introduced, each shared something about themselves with the audience. The stories shared a common theme: In studying the field of aging, students had found their future paths opening up in unimaginable directions – some in careers that currently exist, and others waiting to find or invent opportunities that will become their future occupations.
Portland Community College President Jeremy Brown stopped by the event to wish the graduates well – which gave Gerontology Program Director Jan Abushakrah the opportunity to present him with his “Honorary Geronaut” award.
