PCC women’s soccer team in the market for additional players

Photos and story by

Female athletes – especially soccer athletes – are in the news and enjoying the spotlight, with the U.S. Women’s National soccer team having nabbed the World Cup title this month. At the local level, Portland Community College is mirroring that momentum as it prepares to launch its first-ever women’s collegiate-level soccer team.

And PCC is looking for talented players! Tryouts are under way, as the team prepares for the upcoming season as part of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges conference league.

“Right now we have approximately 15 women who are committed to playing on the team, and we’re looking to add another seven to 10 players over the course of the month or so,” said Bill Patterson, head coach of the women’s team and a part-time instructor at PCC.

The women’s team currently practices twice per week, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays. All practices take place at the?Rock Creek Campus (17705 NW Springville Road).

In August, practices will take place four to five times per week in preparation for the NWAACC Friendlies tournament Aug. 29-30 in Eugene, which precedes the official women’ soccer season beginning Sept. 1.

“We’re so excited to kick off this new team here at PCC, to make soccer a reality at the college,” said Patterson. “With a few additional players on the women’s team, we’ll be in a position to find our rhythm in the league – and hopefully, to bring home some victories for the college.”

For students interested in playing on PCC’s women’s team, contact Coach Patterson at bill.patterson1@pcc.edu. For additional information or inquiries about PCC’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, contact PCC’s Athletic Director Dick Magruder at Richard.magruder@pcc.edu or at (971) 722-5513.
