Whether recovering from or coping with a serious illness or accident, mental power play a crucial role in healing. Learn techniques to harness that power in Full Catastrophe Lifestyle: Moving Beyond Stress, Pain and Illness, an intensive eight-week course on Tuesday evenings at Portland Community College Sylvania Campus beginning July 15.

Participants will be given guidance in various mindfulness meditation practices, encouraged with an attitude of gentleness and acceptance, and given simple yet detailed information on the impact of stress in illness and health.

Based on a model developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center that was featured on the Bill Moyers program "Healing and the Mind," this is an excellent opportunity for those dealing with chronic pain, chronic stress and stress-related illness, or for those helping others with those conditions.

Tuition is $175, including tapes for guided meditation, body scans and stretching exercises. "Lifestyle" meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays through Aug. 19, plus one Saturday, Aug. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., in SCB Room 104, PCC Sylvania Campus, 12000 Southwest 49th Avenue.
