‘Symphonic Band for Winds, Brass and Percussion’ to headline Music Program offerings
Photos and story by Janis Nichols
Starting fall term, the Music Program at Portland Community College’s Rock Creek Campus will offer an addition to the cultural and educational scene in Hillsboro, Beaverton and surrounding communities. The course “Symphonic Band for Winds, Brass and Percussion,” starts Sept. 27 and ends Dec. 13. The Wednesday class meets from 5:30-8:20 p.m. in Building 3 at the Rock Creek Campus.
Noelle Freshner, who earned her degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon, will lead the class. Freshner began her teaching career at Crook County High School in Prineville before moving to the Portland area in 2006. She has been the director of bands for the St. Helens School District since the spring of 2007. At St. Helens, she conducts all of the district’s bands, grades 6-12, and oversees the Winter Guard and Winter Percussion programs.
The class is an opportunity for community members, band leaders or high school students to meet other musicians and play great music. The class is ideal for those who want to study music at PCC, those who would like to add one extra night of performance each week, and community members who want to dust off their instruments and start playing again.
The one-credit class may be taken for grade or for audit. Younger students, ages 16 or 17, are welcome. To get started, enroll at the college’s registration page.
Seniors 62 and older may attend classes for free (minus some fees) by visiting the Tuition Discounts for Seniors webpage. Seniors may also register in person on the first night of class.
