PCC, Multnomah County libraries join forces for Everybody Reads campaign
Photos and story by James Hill
Once again, everybody is reading this spring.
The PCC Library has again partnered with Multnomah County Library for Everybody Reads, a citywide community reading project. The selection this year is a love story titled “Exit West” by Mohsin Hamid. “Exit West” has many themes that relate to refugees, migration, technology, family and relationships, and the impacts of war.?The book has been chosen for a number of awards including being a finalist for the 2017 National Book Critics Circle Award.
The PCC Library has both print and electronic books available for check-out and there are a limited number of the custom “Everybody Reads” copies for reading.
As part of our partnership, the library is hosting the story booths at each campus to collect and record personal narratives related to the book’s themes. Students, staff, faculty, and larger PCC community are invited to share their personal stories about migration or displacement. These stories will be recorded and shared to highlight the diversity of displacement that exists in the community. Accommodations to share stories anonymously is available.
Recording will take place on a drop-in basis from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the following dates and locations:
- Wednesday, Feb. 14 and Thursday, Feb. 15, Southeast Campus Library.
- Wednesday, Feb. 21 and Thursday, Feb. 22, Rock Creek Campus Library.
- Wednesday, Feb. 28 and Thursday, March 1, Sylvania Campus Library.
- Wednesday, March 7 and Thursday, March 8, Cascade Campus Library.
For more details, visit the Everybody Reads website.
I wish PCC Reads worked better with Kindle.
I know you can use PCC Library’s hyper-restricted eBook library and technically read an
“electronic” copy that is not user friendly. And I know you can just buy it for Kindle. But I would be much more likely to read the book if they either offered a limited number of free Kindle copies, or if they offered everyone a discount code on the Kindle version.
The PCC Library wishes we could provide access for Kindle too! Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions from publishers, the library is not able to purchase Kindle titles at this time. The ebook copy we provide comes from EBSCOhost. However, if you have a Multnomah County Library card, you can check out this title in a Kindle format. If you need help, please feel free to contact the PCC Library
