PCC Rock Creek Art Students Unveil Millennium Mural
Photos and story by James Hill
ROCK CREEK – Students who have worked for the past year on a mural depicting 1,000 years of art, unveiled their project as part of a kick-off Art Beat ceremony at the Rock Creek Campus of Portland Community College. The mural was unveiled on Monday, May 7 in Building 3. Rock Creek is located at 17705 N.W. Springville Road. PCC visual arts instructor Susanne Tringali, who coordinated the project with students, said, "The idea came about when Bill Christopher (Rock Creek executive dean) was serving on the college’s millennium committee and he asked what contribution art would make to the celebration. My students and I thought it seemed a fitting outlet to have a community project centered on the accomplishments of artists over the last 1,000 years."Tringali said the students researched artists they were interested in, then painted an image of that artist or a particular culture to incorporate into the mural. Several dedicated students have been working on the project for over a year to bring it to completion. In particular, Kellie Christenson, a resident of Northwest Portland and a student at Rock Creek, has been a prominent contributor. Donations to the project came from Miller Paints of Portland, Ultrecht Art Supplies and Safeway.
