PORTLAND, Ore. – They say the best way to view a culture is through the lens of its art forms. China has a legacy of some of the richest literature and poetry in the world, developed over thousands of years. Let the culture and history of China come alive for you with two non-credit classes offered by Portland Community College, new this winter. Chinese Poetry in English Translation will explore the Chinese poetic tradition in historical context, with an emphasis on Tang poetry. Instructor Amy Potthast will share highlights of the Book of Odes, a cornerstone of Chinese literature. The class will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11 through March 8, in Room 143 at Grant High School, 2245 N.E. 36th. Cost is $89. Chinese language is full of idioms, most with stories behind them like Aesop’s Fables. Potthast will explore these idioms, stories and other elements of Chinese culture in Chinese Sayings. Discover what various written Chinese characters stand for. No knowledge of Chinese required. The class will meet 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 13 through March 10, in Room 143 at Grant High School.
