PCC’s Shawn Bundy named ‘Coach of the Year’ in women’s soccer

Portland Community College women’s soccer coach Shawn Bundy has been named the Northwest Athletic Conference Southern Region Coach of the Year.

The team was in need of a head coach when Bundy started last spring in the position after years of coaching soccer at various Oregon high schools. The Panthers finished the season 5-5-2 in NWAC and 5-8-2 overall, just missing the conference playoffs during the fall season. The job was made all the more difficult as he inherited a team without any returning players. Bundy and his staff had to hit the ground running to recruit players to field a full squad.

“It was a real surprise and honor to be selected for this award after only taking over the program in May,” Bundy said. “Thanks to the support of PCC, the award is really a representation of a huge team effort.”

Bundy also teaches physics and environmental science at Oregon Charter Academy – an online school. He served as the head women’s coach at Ida B. Wells (Wilson) from 2016 to 2018, Reynolds (2012-15) and the Philomath men’s team (2006-10). In recognition of his success, he earned coach of the year awards in 2007, 2009 and 2018. Currently, Bundy holds the role of United Soccer Coaches Girls All-American Region Chair and has multiple coaching certifications from the United Soccer Coaches, including an Advanced National Diploma and special diplomas in “Urban Soccer Coaching” and “Building Team Culture.”

In his own playing career, Bundy was a four-year starting collegiate goalkeeper at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and Hamline University in Minnesota. His performance in net led to him being named most valuable player in his senior year.

PCC Athletic Director Tony Broadous said he was impressed with how quickly Bundy was able to rebuild the Panthers’ squad.

“With a brand new team he was able to blend the new players into his system and they ended up competing incredibly well all season,” he said. “Even more important, the players had a wonderful time and truly enjoyed playing for him. The future of PCC women’s soccer is extremely bright with Shawn as our head coach.”
