D2L Brightspace updates for July 2023
This update is scheduled for the evening of July 27, 2023.
This month’s updates for D2L Brightspace include:
- Assignments – Download a file with an empty filename | New
- Brightspace Editor – Edited images are saved with their original names to improve ease of location |New
- Discussions – Consistent settings and interface of availability dates across Brightspace | Updated

Assignments – Download a file with an empty filename | New
The update allows instructors to download a submitted file from a user who uploaded it with no filename, and resolves the Instructor can’t open assignment submission with no characters before the extension issue.
Previously, instructors could only check files with filenames in the evaluation screen and download them.
The default file name for an empty file is dash “-“.
Brightspace Editor – Edited images are saved with their original names to improve ease of location |New
Changes to an image using Edit image in the floating toolbar are saved as a copy of the image with a suffix containing the day/time of the edits. This will ease identifying edited images in Manage Files.
Discussions – Consistent settings and interface of availability dates across Brightspace | Updated
Availability dates in the Discussions list are now displayed as a simple date range below the titles of discussion topics.
Hovering over the date range text displays a tooltip that includes the information about start and end dates.
Tooltips also include applied settings to explain how the discussion topic appears to learners before and after these dates.
The corresponding update for Quizzes is planned for a future release.
Discussions – New Discussion Creation Experience is here | Reminder
The New Discussion Creation Experience is a minor user interface update for discussion editing and creation for instructors.
This update will bring the display and functionality in line with the existing New Quiz Experience and New Assignment Experience.

PCC offers this limited open forum as an extension of the respectful, well-reasoned discourse we expect in our classroom discussions. As such, we welcome all viewpoints, but monitor comments to be sure they stick to the topic and contribute to the conversation. We will remove them if they contain or link to abusive material, personal attacks, profanity, off-topic items, or spam. This is the same behavior we require in our hallways and classrooms. Our online spaces are no different.
