The Automotive Service Technology Department takes in outside work to provide real service and repair situations for our students, so they can practice recently-learned skills under instructor supervision. The type of repair we offer depends on what classes are in session, and on instructor approval. We do not perform any major mechanical repairs, such as engine rebuilds or project cars, and we do not perform rush jobs – the vehicle owner’s needs are secondary to the educational needs of our students.
How much does it cost?
There is no labor charge for the automotive repair being performed. You must pay our cost for parts we order, along with a small service fee. We no longer accept cash or checks for any repairs, only Visa or MasterCard transactions.
How long does it take?
We do not rush students through their work, and so we cannot guarantee a finish date. Most jobs will take at least 5 days and could take up to 3 weeks or more depending on the repair. You must have alternate transportation.
Classes performing repairs are usually offered every term. If there is a problem after repairs are made, it will be addressed by automotive service technology personnel, and you may have to wait until another class is offered that deals with that type of problem.
What types of repairs do you perform?
There are limits to the types of vehicles we accept – for instance, vehicles more than ten years old will need to be approved by the instructor. Some instructors will not work on certain makes and styles of cars. We will only perform one or two repairs per vehicle per visit… no project cars. We no longer perform engine rebuilds or replacements, cylinder heads, or timing belt/chain repairs of any kind.
We look for the following types of repairs:
- Engine performance: check engine light, tune-ups, DEQ, no starts, etc.
- Steering and suspension: shocks, struts, alignment, power steering, etc.
- Manual transmission: clutches, hard shifting, transmission diagnostics
- Automatic transmission: transmission services flush and diagnostics
- Electrical: minor electrical problems, door lock, windows, lights, etc.
- Heating and air conditioning
- Brakes
The instructor in charge of the class retains the right to deny repair services for vehicles that do not meet program guidelines and to deny services to individuals who fail to abide by the provisions of the automotive service technology program.
