Placement
You can start your study of Russian from the beginning in Russian 101 or place into a higher-level class if you already have Russian language skills. If you’ve studied Russian previously, or if you come from a Russian-speaking family, contact Kristine Shmakov for placement advice and testing.
PCC does not give CLEP exams (credit by exam) for language classes.
General placement advice for PCC Russian courses includes:
Your Russian language experience | Recommendation |
---|---|
If you have never studied Russian before or have studied it before but have forgotten almost everything or grew up in a Russian- speaking home, but never learned to read or write in Russian | Register for RUS 101
(When in doubt, contact Kristine Shmakov) |
If you took RUS 101 at another university, or one year of Russian in high school, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have very basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished first grade in a Russian-speaking country | Register for RUS 102
(When in doubt, contact Kristine Shmakov) |
If you took RUS 102 at another university, or two years of Russian in high school, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished first or second grade in a Russian-speaking country | Register for RUS 103
(When in doubt, contact Kristine Shmakov) |
If you took a full year of Russian at another university, or three years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for at least 6 months, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have elementary reading and writing skills in Russian or finished third grade in a Russian-speaking country | Register for RUS 201
(It is strongly advised to consult with Kristine Shmakov before registering for a second-year level Russian course.) |
If you took a RUS 201 at another university, or fours years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for at least 9 months, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have elementary reading and writing skills in Russian or finished third grade in a Russian-speaking country | Register for RUS 202
(It is strongly advised to consult with Kristine Shmakov before registering for a second-year level Russian course.) |
If you took a RUS 202 at another university, or five years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for a year, or grew up in a Russian- speaking home and have basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished fourth grade in a Russian-speaking country | Register for RUS 203
(It is strongly advised to consult with Kristine Shmakov before registering for a second-year level Russian course.) |
Native speakers who completed beyond the fifth grade in a Russian-speaking country should generally not register for first or second-year Russian language courses at PCC. Please contact Kristine Shmakov if you have any questions or would like to discuss possible placement.
