Placement

You can start your study of Russian from the beginning in Russian 101 or place into a higher-level class if you already have Russian language skills. If you’ve studied Russian previously, or if you come from a Russian-speaking family, contact Kristine Shmakov for placement advice and testing.

PCC does not give CLEP exams (credit by exam) for language classes.

General placement advice for PCC Russian courses includes:

If you have never studied Russian before or have studied it before but have forgotten almost everything or grew up in a Russian- speaking home, but never learned to read or write in Russian Register for RUS 101

If you took RUS 101 at another university, or one year of Russian in high school, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have very basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished first grade in a Russian-speaking country Register for RUS 102

If you took RUS 102 at another university, or two years of Russian in high school, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished first or second grade in a Russian-speaking country Register for RUS 103

If you took a full year of Russian at another university, or three years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for at least 6 months, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have elementary reading and writing skills in Russian or finished third grade in a Russian-speaking country Register for RUS 201

If you took a RUS 201 at another university, or fours years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for at least 9 months, or grew up in a Russian-speaking home and have elementary reading and writing skills in Russian or finished third grade in a Russian-speaking country Register for RUS 202

If you took a RUS 202 at another university, or five years of Russian in high school, or have studied or lived in Russia for a year, or grew up in a Russian- speaking home and have basic reading and writing skills in Russian or finished fourth grade in a Russian-speaking country Register for RUS 203

Native speakers who completed beyond the fifth grade in a Russian-speaking country should generally not register for first or second-year Russian language courses at PCC. Please contact Kristine Shmakov if you have any questions or would like to discuss possible placement.
