Why choose American Sign Language at PCC?

Portland? Community College American Sign Language (ASL) instructors use state-of-the-art teaching methods. Classes are taught completely in ASL; no voice is used in class, allowing you the best opportunity to develop your skills in both using and understanding ASL.

Our instructors are active members of the local Deaf community. Our curriculum is approved by the national American Sign Language Teachers Association, a division of the National Association of the Deaf.

PCC offers classes in this program but not a degree. These classes can be used as electives and as part of the following university transfer plans:

What will you learn?

PCC offers two full years of American Sign Language, plus a Deaf Studies class. Most state colleges, universities, and public high schools in Oregon and Washington accept American Sign Language for foreign language credit.

What will you do?

American Sign Language can be used close to home or anywhere in the country. ASL is the third most commonly used non-English language in the United States.

After completing our classes, you may apply to enter the ASL/English Interpreting program, which will prepare you to work as an interpreter in schools, colleges, and the community.
