Gas Leak at Sylvania Campus
On Thursday, March 29, 2018 at approximately 3:34 pm Public Safety received a report of a possible gas leak at the Sylvania Campus. The gas leak was believed to be coming from the area of the South Classroom Building (SCB) and the Social Science Building (SS). Upon officers arrival they determined that the leak was coming from a gas canister believed to contain liquid petroleum. The canister belonged to one of the contractors doing work at the campus.
Officers quickly cordoned the area off and evacuated people on the first and second floor of the SS building. An announcement was also made over the on campus emergency alert notification system (OCEANS) instructing people to avoid the area of the leak.
Portland Fire Bureau along with the contractor were notified and responded. Fire personnel moved the gas canister away from campus buildings. To render the canister safe it was decided to allow the gas to continue to safely dissipate until it was empty. At 4:35 pm the canister was empty. The all clear message was announced over OCEANS and people were allowed back into the evacuated area.
