Introduction to Patient Access/Revenue Cycle. Students will delve into health insurances; learning about the different types from government to commercial, PPO to HMO. Included in this course is detailed information about healthcare laws, contracts and their purposes; basic medical billing and the claims submission process, review of insurance claim preparation and transmission. Students will receive an overview of requirements for Patient Access positions, different positions within Patient Access and will work with real life scenarios.

Patient access services in a hospital setting encompass many different roles and responsibilities. It is one of the most important and concentrated areas in healthcare. Patient Access Specialists are responsible for the delivery of the critical components of the revenue cycle, as well as keeping the hospital compliant with the many regulatory agencies, maintaining patient safety through correct patient identification practices, and providing extraordinary customer service, insurance verification and collection skills in difficult situations.

Over the next 20 weeks (broke into two 10 week terms) the course will provide participants with the basics of customer service and an introduction to the "tools of the trade" or requirements of being a Patient Access Specialist (health insurance professional) for individuals seeking to work in the healthcare industry.

Patient Access Specialist I is a pre-requisite for Patient Access Specialist II.
