Introduction to Old-Time Ballad Singing
Sing ballads in the Appalachian tradition, unaccompanied by instruments. Listen to songs and learn them line by line with lyrics sheets, without reading music. Dig into their history, practice singing together, and solo if you'd like.
We listen to examples of different singers’ approaches to a given song and practice singing the ornamentation and vocal styles in the old-time tradition. You will come away with three to five songs that you can sing a cappella.
