2021 Winter Supply List
Class Supply List
I will be going over this supply list on our first class. but feel free to take your list to a fabric store and ask for help selecting what you need.
- Sewing Machine: Any sewing machine will be fine as long as it is in good working condition. Please have a new needle in your machine and a couple to spare in case one breaks.
- Cutting Mat: A cutting mat that is designed to work with a rotary cutter.? A medium (approx 18″x24″) or large (approx 24″x36″) size cutting mat works best. Small mats are usually too small to cut large fabrics.? They work well for squaring up or sub-cutting.
- The best mats have easy to read grid lines, lines spaced one-inch apart, and marked with 1/8″, 1/4″, 1/2″, and 1″ increments. Also, self-healing mats will last longer because they reseal rotary blade cuts.
- Rotary Cutter: Have your rotary cutter loaded with a fresh blade.? The best ones for most piece cutting hold a 45mm blade.
- Rulers:?You need a good basic acrylic ruler made for cutting with a rotary cutter.? The best size is at least 6 x 18 inches.? Be aware a small or tiny ruler will not be helpful in cutting blocks, only for squaring up.
- Thread: It can be any thread.? Some people prefer to use 100% cotton thread, but it is a myth that polyester thread will eventually cut your fabric.? Check out Superior Thread’s “Therapy” for information on threads and needles (https://www.superiorthreads.com/videos-thread-therapy).? Most important is a good basic neutral color that will work well with your fabric, white, off-white, gray or black. Keep in mind if your background is light, black thread will show through. Same for dark fabrics using white. I prefer sewing with “natural” or light grey.
- Scissors: Small clipping or embroidery scissors will be needed for cutting threads as you sew. I also like to have a larger pair of scissors for slipping blocks when needed
