Fabric Needs:

In addition to your usual quilting supplies here are general fabric requirements based on 40 – 42 inches of usable fabric. (I have updated the amounts of fabric you will need to make an oversized queen)

  • Fabric A: 1/2 yard (red centers)
  • Fabric B: 1 yard (dark background 1)
  • Fabric C: 1 1/2 yards (dark background 2)
  • Fabric D: 2 yards (dark background 3)
  • Fabric E: 3/4 yard (light background 1)
  • Fabric F: 1 1/2 yards (light background 2)
  • Fabric G: 2 yards (light background 3)

The above yardage amounts to 4.5 yards of dark and 4 yards of light background fabric. Each yard of fabric should yield 14 (2 1/2 inch) strips.

Borders: 1st–1 1/2 yards, 2nd–2 yards, (if a third, another 2 yards)
Batting: King Size package or three yards 102-120 width
Backing: 9.5 yards of 44″ fabric/ or 3 yards of 108″ backing
Binding: 1 yard

If you’re using 2 1/2 inch jelly roll packs you will need at least 4 jelly rolls for the ‘logs’. Each jelly roll is about 3 yards of fabric. This would be about 12 yards of fabric.

**If you want to make your quilt lap-size or twin/standard size, you need less fabric. The blocks are 14.5″ (unfinished), so think if you want to make the whole quilt smaller. For example, a twin size/standard size quilt would be perhaps? 5 blocks x 6 blocks (70″x 84″). That is 19 blocks less than the queen. A lap quilt would be maybe 4 blocks x 5 blocks (54″x 70″), which is 29 blocks less.? We can figure out how much fabric you need for a smaller quilt.

Lap sized (about 54″x 68″):

  • Fabric A: 1/3 yard (red centers)
  • Fabric B: 1/2 yard (dark background 1)
  • Fabric C: 2/3 yards (dark background 2)
  • Fabric D: 1 yards (dark background 3)
  • Fabric E: 1/2 yard (light background 1)
  • Fabric F: 2/3 yards (light background 2)
  • Fabric G: 3/4 yards (light background 3)

Borders: 1st–2/3 yard; 2nd–1 yard
Backing: 4 yards
Batting: twin size
Binding: 2/3 yard

Standard/Twin size (approx 90″x 102″):

  • Fabric A: 1/3 yard (red centers)
  • Fabric B: 2/3 yard (dark background 1)
  • Fabric C: 1 yards (dark background 2)
  • Fabric D: 1 1/2 yards (dark background 3)
  • Fabric E: 1/2 yard (light background 1)
  • Fabric F: 3/4 yards (light background 2)
  • Fabric G: 1 1/4 yards (light background 3)

Borders: 1st–3/4 yard; 2nd–1 yard; 3rd–1 1/2 yards
Backing: 6 yards
Batting: queen size
Binding: 1 yard
