Harvest Update Haiku by Jeffery:

Arugula greens,
Newly protected from frost,
Under the hoop house.

Root veggie bounty,
Radishes, turnips, carrots,
In the back forty.

Tasty green bean pods,
nestled inside their raised bed,
Hide under the leaves.

10/31 – Special Halloween Baking Demonstration – 12-2pm

Don your spooky costume and trick or treat at the Learning Garden to get a free pumpkin cookie! Costume or not, this is a great opportunity for those of you who missed our demonstration last week to learn how to use our earthen oven and grab a freshly baked snack.

Community Member Spotlight:

Jennifer Hamlin – Executive Assistant to the Campus President

Visit the Learning Garden during lunch time and you are likely to see Jennifer munching on greens from her bed and smelling Lavender flowers to unwind after a productive morning in the office. Jennifer has been working at Rock Creek Campus for two years and shares a raised bed with the Campus President. In addition to her raised bed in the Learning Garden, Jennifer has recently started a garden in her backyard which she affectionately calls her “orphanage.” Comprised of extra seedlings from the Learning Garden, her shade garden and side garden give refuge to leftover plants that would otherwise be homeless. Jennifer shares her home with her 11-year-old daughter and enjoys ceramics, painting, and taking nature walks. While she doesn’t always have the time to play with clay or go on a hike, Jennifer values the Learning Garden because it provides a place where she can escape on a walk and have fun in the dirt.

Summer Service Soiree Pictures:

With leaves flying, drills buzzing, and weeds screaming for mercy the Learning Garden hosted 27 volunteers last Saturday during the largest national day of community service. All of our apple trees were mulched, two beds of garlic were planted, two hoop houses were build, several of our raised beds were relabeled and reinforced, countless numbers of weeds were removed, and everyone had a great time. With only a few more days of sunshine left before the rains hit, now is a great time to stop by the learning garden, pick some flowers, make a friend, and check out all the progress we have made!
