Description: 3-4”. Male non-iridescent, rufous upperparts and side contrast with bright orange-red gorget and white breast. Female is green above, with rufous on sides and at base of tail feathers. Habitat: Fairly numerous, widespread from mountain meadows to lowland gardens. Nesting: 2 white eggs in a well-constructed nest insulated with mosses and lichen. This bird also breeds farther north than any other North American species of hummingbirds and undertakes a lengthy migration. Range: The Pacific Northwest, northward through interior valleys and coastal slopes to the Alaskan panhandle. To the south, in California’s redwood forests.
