Native Wildflower Propagation Area
When the PCC Sylvania Habitat Restoration Team goes into natural areas on and near Sylvania campus, they remove invasive plant species that have often replaced or suppressed the original inhabitants. Once invasive plants are removed, if the native ecosystem does not recover, the area is usually supplemented with native plants from a nearby area.
The Native Plant Propagation Area partially fills the need for supplementary plants. Located by the Biology Greenhouse, the Propagation Area is used to cultivate native herbaceous plants, such that small seedlings or resulting seeds can be used in our restoration projects. Fringecups (Tellima grandiflora), Oregon Iris (Iris tenax), Wild Strawberry (Fragaria vesca), Camas Lilies (Camassia leichtlinii), Large Leaved Avens (Geum macrophyllum), etc. are cultivated here.
The Propagation Area contains seeds, seedlings, and mature plants. The Propagation Area is a space filled with many plant species which may bloom, display fall color, or hide themselves away depending on the season. Come have a look sometime. You never know what you might see.
