Native to western Europe, Africa and Asia, Apis mellifera is a type of bee with golden brown and red/brown to black stripes. More commonly known as the “Honey bee”, they are known for creating colonial nests from wax and producing and storing honey. They are very social insects and can fly about 20 miles per hour. There are 26 sub species of the Apis mellifera.
