MTH 243 – Statistics I – Getting a Head Start

Statistics is different from algebra in that it is applied mathematics, thus merely memorizing steps will not lead to any success in the course.? Success comes when one understands the purpose of the subject and how all the ideas that are presented combine together to make up the subject.

Now you don’t need to wait until the course starts to begin your journey, as I will provide some resources to get you started right now.? Statistics requires lots of reading and comprehension of what you are reading.? The comprehension may come quickly or may take a while.? Thus, it is better if you have some idea of what you will encounter right now.

There is a website that you can start that journey featuring ten minute videos based on a case study.? What you will get out of the video series is a beginning understanding of what this course is about.? Similarly, if you watch an NOVA series on astronomy does not make you an astronomer but it does give you an understanding what are the issues in astronomy along with basic facts.

Against All Odds – Inside Statistics, lessons 1 through 25 make up MTH 243.? Watch a video a day, taking some notes, which must include questions that you are curious about, something that caught your attention, and also your quick summary of what the attempted to convey to you.? I would also suggest going back to videos you have already watched once you get further into the videos.? Think of it like rewinding back a movie because all of a sudden you realize an scene earlier on in the movie is now linked to major plot twist.

Lastly be aware that the videos are not intended to show you how to do something but rather why you are doing something and what does it tell you?? When you take the course you will be shown also how to do something but knowing why you are doing it will be advantageous.

Consider Taking an ALC or ALM Mathematics Labs Courses

Has it been a while since your last math course?? Did you finish your previous math course but wish you do some more reviewing while taking your next math course?

The ALC and ALM courses may be the correct fit for you.? Using ALEKs software you can practice specific skills that you need to do well in your math courses.? You can take this course

concurrently with your current math course.? For example some students taking MTH 111 take the MTH 95 ALM course to brush up on missing skills.

ALC covers MTH 20 to MTH 95 material, while ALM covers MTH 111, 243.? An instructor can guide you through the process while in class, and help you with questions on a one to one basis.

These classes can be found under the Alternative Learning Courses or Alternative Learning Math in the schedule.
