Hello and welcome! This page is intended to give you a brief idea of who I am and how your course will run – remotely!
Your remote class
Our class will be taught remotely, but what does that mean? I think of it as “online-plus” — it’s similar to an online class, with some optional opportunities for interaction and synchronous learning that can enhance your experience.
Each week you’ll log in to D2L Brightspace and review the course materials for that week. There will be pre-recorded video lessons for you to walk through, sections from the text to read, and homework problems to work through, all of which are due weekly on Sunday evenings. Each week we’ll also have an optional online meeting using Zoom. During that meeting I’ll give you an overview of what we’re doing that week, answer questions, check in, and talk through some of the tricky points there may be in that week’s lesson. Logging in to the weekly meetings is optional but the content we cover is required; that means you should plan to either log in at our regularly scheduled time (listed in the schedule of classes),?or plan to watch the recording of the meeting afterwards.
What’s the remote equivalent of, “I need some help, can I stop by your office hours?” You can contact me via text, phone, email, or virtual office hours, and I’m happy to set up a specific time to meet with you that works with your schedule, as often as you need.
To succeed in this class, you will need the following things:
- reliable access to the Internet via a COMPUTER (not a smartphone)
- a free PDF scanning app (such as Adobe Scan)
- time management skills – you’ll need to budget 10-15 hours per week to “do math” for this class this term
- the ability to actively reach out and ask for help if you’re confused
- self-efficacy – that’s a fancy term for believing in yourself
Those last two are probably the most important for any class, but especially in one taught remotely. If we were meeting in-person, I’d be able to see the confused look on your face and walk over to help you right there, and give you encouragement if you’re stuck. Please know that even though we’re only meeting virtually, I have the same desire to help you succeed, and the same belief that you can accomplish great things.
I look forward to meeting you remotely!
