ABS Literacy Tutoring Services
ABS Literacy Tutoring Services are provided by dedicated staff and volunteers, serving many adult literacy students each year by matching them on a one-to-one or small group basis with volunteer tutors throughout the city. The program has several tutoring sites city-wide, where volunteers can access instructional materials, meet with their students, receive training or meeting with a tutor coordinator. Volunteer tutors assist adults in reaching higher levels of basic skills.
Who do we serve?
Adult students receive individualized instruction in basic literacy, English language, and math skills.
Tutors work with learners in ESOL levels 1-3 as classroom aides or one-on-one; and levels 3-7 in conversation groups, and learners in the Adult Education Program. ESOL learners are adult refugees, immigrants, and U.S. Citizens, whose first language is not English and who need to improve communication, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. ?Learners in the Adult Education Program need help in improving basic literacy and math skills or getting prepared for the high school equivalency exam.
